Love a good mystery? Three short stories introduce the three main characters from R.E. Donald’s Highway Mysteries series, traditional mysteries featuring Hunter Rayne, a former homicide detective turned long haul truck driver. His boss is Elspeth Watson, also known to her drivers as Big Mother Trucker. In spite of being a woman in a man's world, she has no trouble keeping her drivers in line. Hunter also has a friend and sometime co-driver named Dan Sorenson. He's a garrulous biker who sometimes has difficulty with impulse control. Meet these three characters for free and if you like spending time with them, you might just have found yourself a favorite new mystery series.

I didn’t realize until I read this that it was three “sketches” of the main character and two large supporting characters in the Hunter Rayne Highway Mysteries, rather than a full-length novel, or even a novella. This brief read provides three pieces on main character Hunter Rayne, a long-haul trucker/retired RCMP detective; his sometimes boss, Elspeth Watson aka Big Mother Trucker; and sort-of friend/co-driver Dan Sorenson.

I am a huge fan of this series, but this entry was a disappointment. My fault for not more thoroughly reading the description before I hit the purchase button, I guess. It seemed to me like the “extras” on a DVD – mildly interesting, but you can see why they were cut scenes, and you think, well, that’s 15 minutes of my life I won’t get back. As far as providing a little background into each of the characters, it was ok for what it was, but I felt like these were scenes the author cut from a book or books, didn’t know what else to do with them, and had an electric bill to pay, so why not publish them.

I strongly recommend the other books in this series – interesting plots, great setting (Canada), tight dialogue, likeable characters … This one – meh. I’m glad it wasn’t my first contact with the author, because I probably would not have discovered the wonderful character Hunter Rayne. He’s a bit old-fashioned, driven, the kind of guy you’d want around if you were in trouble. He’s flawed, but he keeps on trying to do the right thing. Don’t let this be your first contact with Hunter or the author.

White Liners Hunter Rayne Highway Mystery Sketches edition by RE Donald Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I hate any book that only lasts an hour, normally. Three short stories and done. But it is by one of my favorite writers so it has to have some stars right?
Short stories introducing the three main characters in the Rayne books--which are really good and I highly recommend them . I'd never read mysteries based on the trucking industry. This is a Canada-based series and very enjoyable.
I like this series, but this isn't part of of it with anything but the characters. Seems like they are ideas that didn't fit and got dropped into this as short stories.
All these books are wonderfully written, the characters are very well developed, the stories are interesting, the writing and editing are well done. The places are true, (I've been to most of the places n the books, and they are real, especially the Top of the world highway). Can't wait for the next book!
not worth the time.... but the full books are definitely worth reading..... the main character is strong, though his side kicks make me wonder why he bothers..... but I like Rayne.
Canadian Author R.E. Donald gives her fans of the Hunter Ryan series, three shorts that feature individual characters from the novel for an fun evening of visiting with good friends. I sell her books to women who mention they work or have worked as dispatchers in the trucking industry
Nash Black, author of Forged Blade.
What readers say is bogus... nuanced characters, well plotted, tight plots - none of these elements were present. These short blurbs of three recurring characters after reading White Liners Hunter Rayne Highway Mysteries does not entice me to read the series. I have no idea if the series involve a mystery, slice of life, horror story or any other genre despite the series saying it is a mystery series.
