“A clever tale, set in the oldest city in America, that draws from St. Augustine’s long and storied past. It’s like a travelogue through the town, and its unique history, with many of the coolest places worked into the mystery. The novel is seductive, sophisticated and authentic. And once you’ve finished reading, you’re going to want to come for a visit.”
—Steve Berry, New York Times and #1 Internationally Bestselling Author

When 16-year-old Liam Poston moves to St. Augustine, Florida, to live with his aunt, he hates everything about the tourist town, from its boring history to the old homes and buildings. An incident on the first day of school forces Liam to join the history club. The dreaded after-school activity does have one positive the knowledgeable and attractive Bailey Deeth.
The discovery of a photograph from a 1906 time capsule showing millionaire industrialist Henry Flagler sitting in an exquisite but unknown parlor resurrects a local rumor of a secret group and hidden treasure. Several pieces of Flagler’s mansion, Kirkside, which were distributed throughout the town when the structure was taken down in 1950, may hold the answer. After a number of mysterious deaths, Liam, Bailey, and the other members of the history club must search for clues in order to solve a century-old code. Standing in their way is Stewart Farlan, a nefarious Scottish treasure hunter who will do anything to stop them. For Liam, it’s a perilous journey which will change the way he views the past.
That is, if he survives the present.

“The writing team of Williams and Knerly have done it again, seamlessly blending historical fact and modern fiction into an intellectual puzzle that keeps the reader eagerly searching for the next piece.”
—Lisa O’Neill Clark, Author of the Southern Comfort Series

Collecting Shadows is a youth mystery novel set around Henry Flagler and St. Augustine history. It is written by Gary Williams and Vicky Knerly.

The main character is Liam, a young man who has lost both his father and mother and has recently moved to St. Augustine to live with his aunt. Liam’s Aunt Rita owns a small antique toy store. Drew is a homeless man that hangs around the alley behind the toy store. Liam and Rita befriend him. Additional characters are members of a high school history club and the history teacher, Mr. Mast.

In an effort to reach a grieving Liam, he is required to join the history club at school. Trouble is he hates history. Mr. Mast introduces the students to a long-standing mystery surround a lost treasure of Henry Flagler. Also on the trail is an unscrupulous treasure hunter. As students and the treasure hunter gather information and get closure to the answer, Liam learns important lessons that help him recover from his grief. The climax of the story is a scary encounter between Liam, Bailey (Liam’s most constant companion), and the treasure hunter.

This is a very well put together story, with several storylines that mesh well. The characters are believable and grow in a believable direction. The history of Henry Flagler and St. Augustine is interesting and appears to be mostly accurate. I say mostly because the treasure isn’t real.

The interaction between Liam and Drew is good. Two fellows struggling with life getting encouragement from each other is a great example for others. One is able to feel Rita’s loneliness and compassion.

I recommend this book for teens and adults. You will enjoy it if you like history, mystery, and the search for hidden treasure.

Collecting Shadows edition by Gary Williams Vicky Knerly Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

I really enjoyed this book. Having a love for history and for the beautiful city of St Augustine made a great book all the more devourable. The story is very engaging and the characters feel real and likeable. I have downloaded other books and look forward to more hours of written goodies from this writing team.
Williams and Knerly have imaginations that are amazing. I've loved all of their books but especially enjoyed this one because it takes place in St. Augustine, an area I'm very familiar with, and the focus on Henry Flagler, a very interesting person whose name appears throughout S. Florida. Weaving history and mystery is their forte and this latest book doesn't disappoint.
I truly enjoyed this book. Reading the history of Henry Flagler & St. Augustine was amazing. Incorporating the mystery of the treasure made it something I couldn’t put down. Such an interesting story with great characters and fantastic backstory.
I certainly would not call this a "youth" mystery novel. It is true the authors used a few high school students as some of the principal characters, but this was a great way to tell this story. It is an intriguing mystery set in St. Augustine , and along with the mystery,(and murders) you are treated to great descriptions of actual places in the town, actual history of the town , Henry Flagler and his second wife, and several rumors of the town; i. e., the tunnel between Flagler College and what is now the Lightner Museum. As a frequent visitor to St. Augustine, I thoroughly enjoyed how they wove all that into the story and could picture myself being there. If I had not been there, this novel would make me want to go. I think they did a brilliant piece of work, I have recommended it to several friends and I don't usually recommend books but this one is unique. I loved it and read it all in one sitting. I just couldn't put it down.
This is a fascinating book and if I didn't reserve five stars for books that are so outstanding I think of them as life changers, I would have given Collecting Shadows that rating. Four stars is for the books I really like and I really liked this one. Interesting characters, interesting history of the town, and an exciting story line - just the kind of book to sit back and read while covered in a warm throw. It was a pleasure to read.
As a fan of mystery novels, and a resident of St. Augustine, this book was right up my alley. It's been quite a while since I have read a book in one day, possibly 20+ years ago in high school, but Collecting Shadows had me hooked from page 1. It only took a few chapters for me to get emotionally invested in the characters, and being a resident of the books setting, I now look at the town and some of my favorite locations in a whole new light being that Gary and Vicky intertwined little known historical facts into its pages. I really hope there is a part 2 because I genuinely loved the characters and look forward to seeing more of them. I can't wait to read more by Gary and Vicky!
This is a treasure hunt in todays world! The teenage characters are just perfect for this story. Sixteen year old Liam has been sent to St Augustine to live with his aunt Rita. Since the death of his father Liam has felt he is alone, unwanted, and betrayed by the actions of his father, that caused his death. He starts a new school and gets in trouble the first day. A history teacher talks the principal into having Liam join a history club that meets after school, since Liam hates history. And so the story starts and the mystery's begin. Following Liam and the club members as they try to figure out the clues left behind by a founder of St Augustine, to find the "treasure" he left hidden away.
I loved the characters, and the way the authors developed them. They feel true to life and are an interesting mix of people, to follow around. I would say this could be considered a YA genre but it is an equally enjoyable for adults, too. I hope Gary and Vicky turn this into a History Club Mysteries series! They have a lot to work with!
