SEX. LIES. SURFING. RIOTS. Welcome to God's country...

The Cronulla riots shocked the world, but there were some who knew it was coming…
There is a simmering darkness in 15-year-old Paddy. A violent incident from his past has forced him to become invisible, but a chance encounter with Dylan King ‘Neptune’ changes everything. Paddy becomes immersed in the world of the Alley Cats, a tribal surf gang with a reputation for violence and crime. Seeking to prove himself, Paddy sparks a war with a rival gang and his world is thrown into chaos. His friends are divided. The girl he has always wanted may no longer be the girl he is with. At school, Brother Kelly struggles to control Paddy’s growing anger and at home, his mother is determined to stop history from repeating. As the war escalates, Paddy discovers the world he had longed for may not be everything he had hoped.
Set in the fractured paradise of Cronulla in1992, Sons of The Shire is a raw coming-of-age story that follows a young man lost in a world of fallen heroes.

Australian fiction has a long tradition of rich story-telling, immersed in our own history. Whilst there is often a nostalgic element to this, more often than not there is a gritty reality and even a darkness to such story-telling. Sean Batman's 'Sons Of The Shire' skilfully achieves a combination of both, depicting with stark reality the underlying violence and anger against an idyllic backdrop of sun, surf and beach culture.

Paddy is a 15 year old, stepping through the minefield of growing up, which potentially could blow up in his face, despite the efforts of those trying to help him. His mis-steps throw him further down the path of violence, which Paddy seems compelled to follow. Likewise, the reader is compelled to follow Paddy's journey and it is not difficult to recognise that Paddy could be any 15 year old boy, at the crossroads of life, wanting the answers yet reluctant to receive them - the paradox of youth.

Batman's crafted and captivated characterisation is also found in Brother Kelly, whom any student at Catholic high schools in the 1980s and 1990s might recognise and the opposite force of Dylan King 'Neptune', who is far from caricature and deeper than one might first anticipate. Yet despite the richness of real humans in the story, it is the shire itself that is a powerful character, in particular the ocean that graces its' shores. Batman brings to life the alluring and perhaps even mystical (?) power of the ocean and its' rolling waves, which draws not only surfers but others to its' waters - and presents the deeper and darker question of who owns all this?

'Sons Of The Shire' is an absorbing story which leaves no room for the reader to manoeuvre - Paddy's story becomes our story. But so too does the story of 'the shire' and with the pre-knowledge of what happened that day in December, 2005 - which Batman hauntingly reminds us of with that infamous text - we realise that the story goes beyond the pages of the book.

Batman's strong and realistic characters, compelling plot and captivating description of the setting draws us in and doesn't let go, long after we finally put down the book.

Don't leave 'Sons Of The Shire' off your reading list - indeed place it at the top and find yourself in an incredible story.

Sons of The Shire edition by Sean Batman Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

A superb read from cover to cover. The characters really ring true and it provides a great insight into the culture that spawned one of the most disgraceful events in modern Australian history. Looking forward to the next novel.
Great read. Seeing the perspective of an insider in the surf scene was unreal. The whole set-up, revisiting history was great, all with the local landmarks and hang-outs we know so well.
Easy to read and well paced. Looking forward to the next project.
Well done.
